Mandatory NDIS registration is expanding: Butler’s April 2026 announcement

On 22 April 2026, Minister for Health, Disability and Ageing Mark Butler announced at the National Press Club that mandatory NDIS provider registration will expand to cover personal care, daily living supports, and supports provided in closed settings. The commencement date for the expansion has not yet been announced. The existing mandatory registration for Supported Independent Living (SIL) and platform providers from 1 July 2026 is unchanged.

SIL providers must be NDIS registered from 1 July 2026 — here’s what to do now

From 1 July 2026, mandatory NDIS registration applies to all providers delivering Supported Independent Living (SIL). The rule was confirmed by the Minister for the NDIS in December 2025. Unregistered SIL providers who do not register during the transition period will not be permitted to continue delivering SIL supports — and sanctions, compliance and enforcement actions may apply. Because the registration process takes 8–12 months, the time to act is now.
